Tips to use a compass for running

It is a basic skill that everyone should learn how to use a compass. In this modern era of technological gadgets, when everyone has a smartphone and a GPS device with several navigation applications on it, using a compass might seem thought of as old school. However, you will not have internet access or GPS connections everywhere. Hence, a compass is an absolute requirement in such circumstances. It is also one of the most essential pieces of outdoor/camping gear you should have. Suunto, Zone3, and Silva are the leading manufacturers of running compass and navigation devices.

How to use a compass?

Knowing your location with a compass is simple, but it comes with some tips and tricks. Have a look below;

• Holding the compass run correctly is the first and foremost important point to start with. Place the compass flat on the palm of your hand in front of your chest. This is the right way of holding the compass.
• All orienteering compasses have a magnetized needle in red or a bright orange colour with or without fluorescent markings. The needle is set into a compass housing and placed on a base plate.
• You’ll need to find at least two known landmarks either Mountains or lakes.
• Using your compass, adjust your map so that the north is pointing to the true north.
• Next, take a bearing on your first pointer: Line up your bearing of the travel arrow with your landmark, then turn the bezel until the needle lines up with the markings for the north.
